SupelMIP™ NSAID

- A selective SPE sorbent for extraction of NSAIDs from complex samples e.g. waste water samples

Background

Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs are pharmacologically active compounds used to treat pain, inflammations and fevers. Pharmaceutical compounds such as NSAIDs have been used extensively in recent years. These compounds may reach wastewater treatment plants and since they are not completely eliminated there, the compounds can reach the groundwater and even domestic water (see http://www.dwi.gov.uk/research/reports/dwi70-2-213_exsum.pdf). Ibuprofen, diclofenac and naproxen are non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, which have analgesic and antipyretic activities. Clofibric acid is an active metabolite of clofibrate, etofibrate and etofyllinclofibrate. These compounds are used as blood lipid regulators. Because of the pharmacological activity of the NSAIDs, the concentration needs to be accurately quantified in environmental samples such as natural waters etc.

Features and applications

The acidic, polar NSAIDSs are normally analyzed by LC-MS/MS. However, when working with complex matrices, a drawback is the sensitivity of this technique to matrix effects (ion suppression). Furthermore, NSAIDs are often present at very low concentrations in water. In order to minimize these problems pre-concentration and sample clean-up steps are needed before the compounds can be analyzed chromatographically. Conventional SPE materials that have been used to extract NSAIDs from water samples have shown low recoveries and lack of selectivity.

Both recoveries and selectivity are considerably improved by incorporating the new SupelMIP in the pre-concentration step. SupelMIP for NSAIDs has been optimized for the extraction of diclofenac, ibuprofen, clofibric acid and naproxen with high recoveries and reproducibility. Other NSAIDs with related chemical structures would also be expected to be extracted.
