SupelMIP™ TSNAs

- A class selective SPE sorbent for multi-residue extraction of 4 different Tobacco specific Nitrosamines: NNK, NNN, NAB and NAT

Background

Tobacco-specific nitrosamines (TSNAs) are a class of known carcinogens that are found only in tobacco products. The TSNAs are created during fermentation, curing and burning of the tobacco leaf.

People are exposed to TSNAs by using tobacco and by second-hand smoke and TSNAs show the highest concentration of any group of strong carcinogens in mainstream cigarette smoke. NNN, NNK, NAB and NAT are the most common TSNAs in tobacco products where NNN and NNK are the most carcinogenic compounds (abbreviations see below)

Exposure to TSNAs from tobacco products can be confirmed by their detection in a variety of biological samples, like saliva and urine. TSNAs can also be measured in tobacco abstracts.

Abbreviations
NNN = N'-nitrosonornicotine, NNK=(4-methylnitrosamino)-1-(3-pyridyl)-1-butanone, NAT=N'-nitrosoanatabine, NAB=N'-nitrosoanabasine

Features and applications

With this sorbent the 4 different Tobacco specific Nitrosamines can be selectively extracted from biological samples with high recoveries. Compared to current analytical methods for accurate TSNA detection, which are elaborate and time-consuming, SupelMIP™ TSNAs gives reliable and accurate results and reduces the sample handling significantly. It allows extremely low limits of quantitation and has been shown to be very reproducible.

More information about SupelMIP™ TSNAs can be found in the Product Bulletin
Recovery, precision and accuracy are given together with chromatograms and SPE procedure in the Data Sheet. For further reading we also refer to the literature list below.
